Geotechnical Engineer - Full TIme

We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer with proven Canadian experience to join our growing team. Almor Testing Services has been providing geotechnical engineering and materials testing services in the Calgary area for more than 50 years. We are looking ahead to coming projects and growth. 


Who we are looking for:


Our ideal candidate will come with local experience as a registered member of APEGA. That experience will be demonstrated by someone who is comfortable with being a supervising engineer for one of our CCIL certified labs and taking on responsibility for review and signing of daily materials testing reports. Your project management skills will be put to work managing and supervising geotechnical site investigations and projects through completion. Additionally, this roll involves building and maintaining relationships with current Almor clients and working to build new relationships within the industry and strong interpersonal skills are desired. We are looking for team member to join us long term as we work towards another 50 years as an independent locally owned firm. 


What we can offer:


Your team at Almor will include a small group of experienced Geotechnical Engineers who are well established at Almor. The support team includes multiple Sr. Technicians and administration members each with 20+ years of experience. We also employ a group of committed EIT's who are pursuing careers in geotechnical engineering. Seasonal Engineering co-op students make up the rest of our team and include engineering students joining us for work terms up to 16 months in duration. 


Our lab is updating and increasing its capabilities to support and grow our diverse range of client needs. Our lab also carries CCIL certifications in Aggregates, Asphalt and Concrete. Inhouse geotechnical testing includes a range of index tests, plus some advanced testing including consolidation, unconfined compression and permeability testing.


We also have exclusive use of three inhouse managed and operated geotechnical drill rigs. The fleet is made up of a truck mounted (F-550) drill and two track mounted drills (Diedrich D-50/Geoprobe) which can provide support for a variety of drilling needs.

Employment Opportunities

Materials Technician - 4 - 16 month student position

General Overview:

Almor Testing Services Ltd. (Almor) is a geotechnical and materials testing consultant, based in Calgary, Alberta.  Almor provides geotechnical consulting and materials testing services to land developers, general contractors, municipalities, and other consultants.  Projects Almor participates in include residential and commercial developments and civil infrastructure upgrades/improvements.  Almor’s role onsite varies, but includes preliminary geotechnical investigations, consulting, and QC/QA testing of materials.


Student(s) hired will perform field and laboratory testing of soil, concrete, and asphalt materials, and be expected to keep accurate and organized records of test results, calibrations, site observations and billable hours.


Daily Activities:


Laboratory Work (soils and concrete) - Student technicians will perform ASTM and CSA test procedures, record keeping and facilities/equipment maintenance (light duty cleaning, equipment calibrations, etc.). Lab tests on soils are typically part of an overall process used to identify soil types and engineering properties, which are then used to develop project specifications or confirm compliance with specifications.  Lab work with concrete involves technical measurements, record keeping and testing of compressive strength specimens.  


Field Work (soils, concrete, and asphalt) - Student technicians will participate in compaction monitoring/testing during civil construction, which involves the use of a nuclear moisture/density gauge to measure the density of soils and asphalt.  Concrete testing involves slump and air tests, as well as the casting of compressive strength samples. Students will be working with clients and contractors in a QC/QA role to ensure compliance with project specifications.  This will involve following ASTM and CSA test methods, awareness of project specifications and standards, as well as record keeping and communication of results to clients, contractors, and supervisors.

Employer Expectations:

· Maintain a valid Alberta Class 5 license* or equivalent

· Regularly lift 25 kg (55 pounds)

· Be available to work extended hours and weekends


* A valid driver’s license, along with a good driving record is required. Please submit a driver’s abstract and claims experience letter from your insurer.


Training Provided:

· Company orientation(s)

· Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)

· Generic and Worksite specific WHMIS

· Construction Safety Training System (CSTS)

· Task specific training

· Additional training and orientations, as required


Skills Obtained or Improved:

· Written and verbal communications through record keeping and daily activity documentations

· Time management skills through opportunities to co-ordinate with clients/contractors and multitask with lab and field work

· Exposure to professional/client/contractor relationships

Almor has been employing co-op students for more than 30 years.  We provide a casual environment where students regularly earn overtime hours from week to week.  Throughout the work term there are opportunities to socialize at events held at the office (BBQ’s, evening socials, etc.) and long-term connections with students from other institutions and programs are often made during these co-op terms.
